How Much Does It Cost to Elope in Santa Barbara?

Eloping in Santa Barbara can cost a lot less than most people expect. For a simple courthouse ceremony, the county fees for a civil ceremony come to roughly $230 to $280. Add photography and a few personal touches, and most couples I work with spend somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000 all in.

Here’s the full breakdown, so you can plan a day that feels special without the price tag of a traditional wedding.

County fees

These are set by the Santa Barbara County Clerk-Recorder. They’re the only costs you can’t skip if you’re marrying at the courthouse.

ItemCost
Public marriage license$100
Confidential marriage license (no witness needed)$111
Ceremony reservation$23
Civil ceremony at the Hall of Records$104
County-provided witness (optional)$51
TotalAbout $227 to $278

Fees were current as of October 2026. Want more guests or a weekend date? A private ceremony in the Mural Room ($700) or the Courthouse Gardens ($1,200) is a separate option through County Parks.

Photography

This is where most of your budget goes, and it’s the part you’ll keep forever. Here’s what my collections look like:

CollectionCoveragePrice
The Essentials1 hour: license, ceremony, a few family photos$750
The Full Experience2 hours: adds portraits around the courthouse$1,150
The Elopement4 hours: getting ready or first look, portraits at up to two locations$2,200

Optional extras

None of these are required, but they’re where couples usually personalize the day. These are rough ranges; prices vary a lot by vendor.

  • Bouquet and boutonniere: roughly $100 to $300
  • Hair and makeup: roughly $150 to $400
  • A celebration dinner: anywhere from a casual taco spot to a tasting menu
  • Highlight video: $400 for a 30 to 45 second film set to music

Ways to save

  • Bring your own witness and save the $51 county fee.
  • Choose a public license unless you want your record kept private.
  • Keep the guest list small. Up to 15 people fit at a civil ceremony, so there’s no venue to rent.
  • Pick the two-hour package. It covers the ceremony and a full portrait session, which is all most couples need.

Eloping somewhere other than the courthouse?

Santa Barbara is full of beautiful places to elope, from Butterfly Beach at golden hour to the Riviera. Many couples do both: a quick courthouse ceremony, then portraits by the ocean. Public beaches and parks can have their own permit rules, so check before you plan a ceremony there.
